Wilderness First Aid Training

The WFA course will introduce the participant to skills necessary to handle basic first aid emergencies in a wilderness setting. The course runs Saturday (7:30am – 7:30pm) and Sunday (8:00 am-12:00 pm). Check-in is Friday from 7:00 to 9:00pm. Participants must be present for all sessions in order to receive completion card.

The course combines lecture with hands-on application of material covered in class. Successful completion of this course certifies the participant in WFA for a period of two years and meets the requirements for Philmont, SeaBase, and other high adventure camps.

Attire is BSA field uniform for both days. Participants will need to bring a personal water bottle and note taking supplies. Some training will be outside, so be certain to plan for any outdoor weather conditions. Meals will be provided (Saturday breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday breakfast) along with accommodations.

Some, but not all, of the topics covered include:

1 What is wilderness first aid?

2 Patient assessment.

3 Airway management.

4 Hemorrhage control.

5 Shock management.

6 Improvised splinting techniques.

7 Litter construction and carries.

8 Scenario based practice sessions.
